So, lately two things have been going on in my life. The first one is that I find myself going through a major organizing and cleaning kick. Whenever I am at home I just find myself wanting to clean and sort out the house (which is great and all; I just wish I didn’t feel that way after an 11 hour shift…).
The other thing is that I have this DIY urge (more like obsession). I just feel the need to express myself and get some DIY done.
So for today’s post I decided to combine the two, and what did I end up with… duh duh duh (those are supposed to be trumpets)! You guessed it, homemade cleaning products.
Why I never thought of these before is beyond me – they are eco-friendly (if you make the right ones), cheaper, more effective and so customizable that they should be at the forefront of DIY projects!
So here are my top five DIY homemade cleaning products that promise to do all of the above!
Toilet Cleaner and Deodorizer:
Great for cleaning toilets; and leaving the bathroom smelling fresh and fragrant.
Fill a spray bottle with White Vinegar, and add a few drops of your favorite scented essential oil – Lavender works great, but anything citrus is also good.
Perfect for your windows and mirrors.
Fill a spray bottle with 2 cups water; 1/2 cup white or cider vinegar; 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentration);1 to 2 drops of your favorite essential oil, which gives the solution a lovely smell.
All Purpose Cleaner
As seen on Rodale’s Organic Life here; this is a lovely twist on a DIY all purpose cleaner.
Dissolve 2 tsp borax and 1 tsp washing soda (this can be found in your stores laundry isle, and should NOT be confused with baking soda) into 2 cups of very hot water, strain the mixture through a very fine sieve, and funnel it into a 1-quart spray bottle. Add 4 tbs Vinegar, ½ tsp washing liquid, ¼ tsp tea tree oil, 8 drops rosemary oil, 8 drops tangerine oil and 8 drops lavender oil and shake to blend. Top off with more hot water and shake again.
Surface Dust Buster
Use this to keep surfaces free from harmful dust, and also smelling great.
Mix together in a bottle 10 drops lemon oil, 2 Tablespoons lemon juice and a few drops olive oil. Use with a flannel cloth to keep surfaces free from dust.
Lastly, keep your work surfaces and other areas sanitary by using this simple disinfectant.
In a spray bottle mix 2 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of liquid soap, and 25 drops of tea tree oil.
It really is as easy as that to keep your home clean without using harmful; and expensive; cleaning products.
