Why would I even look at a Keto diet? I have been struggling with my weight ever since the birth of my daughter in 2010. Before this I used to be small, with a flat stomach and I weighed approx. 60kg (132 pounds). I didn’t have body issues and really actually loved my body.
Gaining weight – ouch
Since the birth of my daughter however, my weight has increased to the point where I now do have issues with my body, and I have tried a few things. Meal replacement shakes, dietary supplements, nasty weight loss teas. I didn’t start dieting, because I don’t really believe in diets. I don’t see the value of starving yourself to lose weight, and then once you have a bad day and binge you gain all that weight back.
Enough was enough
But enough was soon more than enough, and so I decided to look for a healthier meal plan that would also help me lose weight. I soon came upon the ketogenic diet (which is actually more of a meal plan/ lifestyle than a diet). The ketogenic diet also goes by the name low carb, low sugar, high fat diet.
What is a ketogenic diet?
Basically in this diet you cut out carbs completely, limit sugar intake and increase your healthy fats intake. Before starting, make sure you have a way of tracking your macros (the percentages of carbs vs fats vs protein). This can be either via an app, or even an excel sheet. This is important in the beginning as you are still learning about keto to help you stay on the right path. The breakdown should be 70% Fat, 25 % protein and 5 % carbs. Also important to note that the best way to get your body into ketosis and really start experiencing the benefits, you need to stay below 20g of carbs a day.
Although the weight loss aspect of the diet is what initially intrigued me about the diet; there are also numerous other health benefits that make it so much more than just another diet. Along with the weight loss, there is also the increased energy levels, mental vitality, increased immune system and much more. Some woman have also reported that they have noticed benefits with regards to their monthly cycles, no bloating, less cramping and an overall better feeling – although I cannot confirm this for myself.
How I started
So I jumped into the diet very quickly, and am still learning a lot as I go on and I have to say that so far the benefits for me are worth it. I haven’t lost all that much weight yet (a few pounds) but that is not unheard of as some people do take slightly longer to get the weight loss benefits of a ketogenic diet. I have however noticed that my bloating is much better. I used to bloat very easily. Eating one wrong thing and I would bloat, and stay bloated for days! Now however I’m not bloating, and when I do I understand why – that I have consumed too much carbs – and I can adjust my meals accordingly.
I am still a novice on this diet; and by no means an expert yet; but will share my experiences as I go on with you.
